Can you believe that this snow-white façade, blue shutters, and a garden lit with string lights… are all in Poland? The place is called Queen’s Garden, which makes sense: once you settle in, you’ll find a cold brew in your hand, a wide-brimmed hat on your head, and a bright smile on your face. The name came from the original creator of the spot, and it stuck. It fits perfectly, because the outdoor area really steals the show. Nestled among lush greenery, the terrace catches sun all day long. There’s also a gazebo for shade—and late-night chats that stretch until dawn. And when you’ve soaked up the sun and chatted your heart out, grab the paddles, head to the water, hop in a boat, and explore that mysterious island in the middle of the pond.

We may not have a PhD in windmills, but the moment we saw Zyndaki Windmill, we knew this wasn’t your typical example. In Poland you usually find post mills—boxy structures with hefty sails—and classic Dutch-style mills—cylindrical bases that flare out toward the ground. From the Middle Ages to the 20th century, windmills were as common here as tractors are now. But none look like Zyndaki Windmill. Sixteenth-century travelers would have had to head west to find a mill built from stone, like this one crafted by Nina and Rafał. They started from scratch, shaping stones from nearby fields and stacking them—without a crane, since none could reach the hilltop. Impressive, right? After six years of work, it stands as Poland’s only stone windmill. Inside you can sleep, nibble on fresh challah, and even take a soak in the bathtub.

You might wonder how a spot in a small village in the Kaczawskie Mountains looks like it belongs in an Italian villa brochure. Here’s why: first, the host, Urian, is Dutch by birth and—by trade—a designer, gardener, and painter, with a passion for art, nature, and interiors. He knew exactly what he was doing. Second, the inn’s furnishings were all sourced by Urian at international markets: paintings, sculptures, antiques, and vintage furniture. Nothing is left to chance. And third, the area itself felt like “little Italy in Poland,” as guests have said. The rolling landscape, starry nights, and silence convinced Urian to move here. It charmed him first, and for over a decade it’s been amazing every guest.

Our first thought: a writer’s home somewhere in Scandinavia—based on the number of crime novels set there, every village must have its own gripping mystery. There’s some truth to that. Kasia’s father, a writer and historian, once inspired this house on the Żuławy plains when she stayed here years ago. Over time, Kasia became an interior architect and conservator, then returned to Żuławy to work her magic. Her first project was their restored 200-year-old under-the-eaves house. Tilia was the next challenge. Its simple interiors, natural materials, and soft color palette would appeal to any Scandinavian, but make no mistake—this is a very local project. The materials were salvaged from demolished buildings: beams, planks, bricks, and roof tiles blended with clay and other natural elements. The result is so calming, we feel tranquility wash over us just looking at the photos.

It might be Wleń, but it feels like an English garden. We’re hardly experts—we only know enough about gardening to locate wild strawberries in summer. But we can confidently say you won’t find another spot like this in Poland or the UK. In an old carriage house, they’ve created two English-style apartments, with a spacious shared living area on the ground floor, a flower-filled garden outside, and truly spectacular panoramic views. There’s even a dedicated picnic spot under apple trees so you can savor the hills along with your picnic. We’re charmed by the attention to detail, eco-friendly solutions, and local art inside. We tip our hats and hope to drop by for five o’clock tea in this garden one day.

Dear guests, mere praise seems insufficient for this home. Feast your eyes on this greenhouse-inspired house for five, born from a futuristic vision by Professor Lipiński (yes, the same architect behind Poland’s Śnieżka meteorological observatory). His concept addressed cramped, concrete-clad cities by blending greenery and home-grown greenhouse crops with natural materials to promote psycho-physical renewal. This house is open to guests only a few days each month, making it a perfect opportunity for architecture lovers or anyone eager for a sensory break from overstimulating interiors and environments.
