Skillcations

Skillcations

a journey to new skills

At some point in every vacationer’s life, you reach the ultimate milestone: all the boredom conquered and the first prize in the doing-nothing contest—'golden deckchair buttprint on your backside'—won. If that’s exactly what you need on holiday, go ahead and do nothing. All of you. But if you’re on team 'I’m ready for new challenges' or team 'holidays are too short to do nothing,' we’ve got something special. Skillcations are the new travel trend that combines vacationing in Poland with learning new skills. They could be small skills (operating a lawnmower) or serious ones (sailing). It’s all about giving yourself a chance to explore, discover new hobbies, and collect experiences. Spring is the perfect time to drag yourself out from under the winter duvet, break the zombie-scrolling loop, and make up for months of hibernation.

As grandma used to say: 'People just waste away at home.'

Beginner Knife Maker

Visit Chrosiówka

And what if you could bring back more than just extra pounds from vacation? Under Wojtek’s watchful eye, you’ll learn real skills and go home with a handmade souvenir. Win-win?

Here’s the setup: nearly a hectare of land by Masurian Lake Inulec, two houses, and hosts Asia and Wojtek, happy to share what they love. Wojtek is a local knifemaker who’ll help you craft your own knife or one of its parts (like the handle or sheath). In his small workshop, he forges knives from tool and carbon steel that don’t need a forge for hardening. For the cost of materials, he’ll guide you through his process, show you his tools, and teach you to shape beautiful, one-of-a-kind knives. But that’s not all—Wojtek is also a certified sport-shooting instructor and referee, and he’d love to take you to the range to show you how to hit your target.

Skills from Wojtek covered, now let’s talk about Asia. Asia loves math and she has the diplomas to prove it. If you’re traveling with a future exam candidate, a math enthusiast, or even someone with allergies, talk to your hostess. Asia is eager to share her math knowledge and that passion with anyone interested.

Junior Massage Therapist

Quick Massage Course

Now something tigers love most—gentle touch. We don’t trust anyone who avoids massages. But what if you got serious about it? Beata, the hostess of the Anahata retreat, is a physiotherapist and massage instructor. For 15 years she’s explored various techniques, giving massages and gladly sharing her knowledge with anyone interested.

This takes place in Suwałki region, just a stone’s throw from Lake Aszaryn. According to Hindu tradition, Anahata is the chakra of compassion, love, and positive energy, linked to healing forces. Coincidence? Not at all. Beata knows how touch can heal the body. A massage by the lake? Absolutely. Outdoor sessions? No problem. Beata leads workshops in head self-massage, Balinese massage, lomi-lomi, hot stones, herbal poultice stamps, and foot reflexology.

We think it’s a great option for couples wanting to polish their technique or groups of friends looking for a relaxed spa day—where loud laughter won’t draw disapproving looks. On the green grounds you’ll find two separate houses, a heated outdoor pool, a sauna, a jacuzzi, and a hot tub. There’s time to soak up the sun by the pool, unwind in the tub, and catch up on any missed series (with an outdoor cinema setup, of course), all while learning something new and soothing.

Aspiring Sailor

Pearls at Your Feet

Here’s a tale of a passion passed down through generations. Welcome to Perły, on the very edge of Masuria in Poland, where Thai ice cream and henna tattoos haven’t arrived.

Robert, the host at Perły, inherited his love of sailing from his grandfather, who once navigated legendary tall ships. Raised on stories of distant voyages, he followed in those footsteps and today is a certified instructor–examiner with over 30 years’ experience teaching sport and recreational sailing. Future world champions have trained under him, and he’s inspired countless others—including you—to take to the water.

As Perły guests, you get priority for lessons. Adults learn on the yacht Mak 747, while the youngest sailors sail in charming Optimists affectionately called 'soapboxes' by the hosts. To earn your sailing license, plan for a week of training, though you can spread it out if needed. For those craving speed, there are motorboats—yachts with 70 hp engines. The motorboat license course takes just three days or a full weekend.

What else to do at Perły? Best of all, nothing. Explore the surrounding lakes, enjoy simple living, go barefoot in the garden, and soak up the peace of this part of Masuria. After meeting local wildlife, head to the Nature Reserve of Lake of Seven Islands. You’ll find countless bird species, mud crayfish, turtles, and even free-roaming Konik horses. You couldn’t paint it more beautifully.

Master Baker

Did you know that in Poland people toss out 184 loaves of bread every second? Store-bought bread is like fast food of the bakery world—flavorless and a magnet for mold. What if you tried your hand at baking? If fresh bread is the star of your breakfast but you’d rather not spend your paycheck on it, explore the art of baking in places famous for their loaves and that have already trained a whole academy of bakers. Here are our top spots for a holiday combined with baking lessons. Long live gluten!

Beskid Niski: For bread education, head to Ropek and the Stara Farma. During 4–5 hour workshops, Magda will reveal baking secrets, share her recipe and sourdough starter, and by morning your own loaf will sit on the table framed by the beautiful Beskid landscape.

Closer to Warmia? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered there too. Note this down: Kotowo 5. In season, just drop by hostess Paulina’s kitchen to see “how it’s done”—no appointments or fees. Off-season, paid weekend workshops are available.

If you’re in Lower Silesia, it’s Artystyka! All year round they offer bread-baking workshops using a traditional Łemko sourdough starter named Stefan. Krysia says: “It’s about an hour spent exploring what eco bread should contain (and what shouldn’t), plus hands-on practice with apron and flour. Adults and families are welcome. To book time with me and ‘Stefan,’ best to arrange it before you arrive.”

Junior Potter

Working with clay is like a mantra. It calms, reduces stress, gives a sense of agency, and teaches acceptance of imperfection. No coffee tastes as good as one sipped from a mug you shaped yourself. Always wanted to try but Netflix was closer? Want to get your hands dirty and see if you love pottery? We know a few holiday spots where you can catch the ceramics bug.

Of course, if you’re in the Izera Mountains, it’s Pole Ryżowe and the little house in the middle of nowhere. Step outside and you’ll see that the hostess is quite the artist. The interior is filled with unique mugs, ceramic lampshades, and sculptures. If “creative rest” is your thing, this is it. Aldona, hostess of Pole Ryżowe, is a passionate ceramicist. Just say the word, and she’ll invite you to the “potter’s hut.” During private workshops—exclusive for guests—you’ll learn the basics of working with clay, create your own artwork, and glaze your finished piece. Aldona will handle the final firing and glazing, then pack and ship everything to you. Bonus? The view from the window and a dry sauna plus a hot tub waiting in the wings. Photographs 1–3.

And in the Lubusz region you can mold clay in a palace! At Pałac Chichy, the neoclassical 18th-century palace hides five suites, a delicious Polish-Italian kitchen, and its own ceramic studio. The hosts are ready to guide you if you dream of shaping something special. They have plenty of teaching experience, hosting group workshops for guests of all ages as well as individual classes for solo creators. Photographs 4–5.

Weed Masterchef

Latosowo Workshops

Remember how grandma got to dessert right after dinner, then made sandwiches right after dessert? It’s similar here. Welcome to the Latosowo fairytale. In deep countryside somewhere between Mazovia and Podlasie, Bartek and Kasia run a farm where relaxation revolves around food. We know, we tested it on our own stomachs. Here you eat everything that seems inedible. Dishes made from meadow and garden harvests go straight to the hearts of gastro-tourists and fans of experimental cuisine. Have you ever tried young hop shoots in butter and homemade breadcrumbs or a weed salad with dressing? Exactly. The hosts know the weed atlas by heart and are happy to teach you about them, then show you how to turn everything into a meal. Kasia writes: “Workshops can only take place during the early growth period, from late March to mid-June, when shoots are still tender and young.” The best time for a weedy adventure runs from late March to mid-June. The cost is 90 PLN per person (about 3 hours) and workshops require a minimum of four people.

Off-season for spring greens, at Latosowo you can develop skills like stilt walking or woodworking. Guests can create a usable work of art (for example a board or bowl) in workshops with reclaimed wood. You choose the wood and shape, then cut, refine, sand, and preserve it. The cost depends on hours worked (120 PLN/hour). You’ll wrap it up in about three hours—unless you get really carried away.

Cosmetics Ninja

Visit Artystyka

This is pure eco-tourism at its best, the golden-carrot winner in our eco certification. Meet Krysia and Kajetan, who for 19 years have run a welcoming eco-tourism spot on the edge of a forest in the Bystrzyckie Mountains of Lower Silesia. Both are trained artists and natural talents. He runs the kitchen, she makes sure you have something to eat on. He builds and installs, she shares her knowledge of ceramic design, making eco-cosmetics, herb gathering, and bread baking. And those eco-cosmetics—their undeniable passion. For 13 years Krysia has developed her own recipes and shares them with anyone interested. Ever wondered what’s in your favorite balm or what those symbols on the packaging mean? Krysia will tell you. In her eco-cosmetics workshop, you’ll not only learn theory but also create your own mixtures from nature’s gifts, following the motto 'don’t put on anything you wouldn’t eat.' The full offer is five days of knowledge and relaxation, but if you don’t have time or the dates don’t work, gather a smaller group and talk to Krysia—she’ll figure something out. The full 2025 workshop schedule is available here. Book lodging through Slowhop.

Pro tip: A stay at Artystyka is a great chance to soak up knowledge about eco-living, permaculture gardening, or an underground walipini greenhouse. You’ll also enjoy master chef Kajetan’s delicious food and marvel at the free-flying ducks—the snipes.
