Slovakia for the Hesitant – a Fresh Take

Slovakia for the Hesitant – a Fresh Take

Let's face it: for most Poles, Slovakia remains a mystery. Our sweet, romantic ties are stronger with the Czech Republic or Hungary. We often overlook our southern neighbor.

It took us a while to figure out how to show you Slovakia from an unconventional angle. Then inspiration struck and this idea was born. We hope it turns into an amazing trip.

Castles, palaces and manors

Discover castle stays in Slovakia

Despite Slovakia's small size, there's an abundance of castles, palaces and manors here. Someone once counted 180, ruins included. Following in their footsteps is worth every minute. You can choose spine-chilling ones (Čachtice Castle), those home to the White and Black Ladies (Levoča, Kežmarok), or the castle where Juraj Jánošík was supposedly imprisoned (Likava).

Bryndza, cheese korbáčiky and halušky with bryndza

Visit sheep farms in Slovakia

Yes, those fluffy white sheep. Thanks to them, most of us fill our plates with sheep cheese, bryndza and those irresistible cheesy korbáčiky. Here are places where you can experience daily life on a sheep farm: Pajtisko pod Chočom, Dača

The fujara is a musical instrument—a kind of flute, but a large one, often nearly 2 meters long. The Slovak fujara was inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2005.

Painted crosses in Podpolanie

Explore Podpolanie painted crosses

They stand at crossroads and beside churches—some carved, some painted, some soaring up to 8 meters high. Thanks to host Peter at Chata Tri Lipy, you can dive deeper into the places, people and flavors of this region.

Slovakia's answer to the Grand Canyon? Absolutely—it's just a canvas painted in greens, grays and blues. Valleys, gorges, ladders, waterfalls, vistas, caves, via ferrata routes and rafting through the Hornád Gorges.

High-mountain transports

Meet Slovak mountain porters

High-mountain transport, carried out by porters in the Slovak mountains, is a centuries-old tradition—and one of the most eco-friendly ways to move goods. The loads can exceed 100 kg on a porter's back. This tradition is UNESCO-listed.

You might encounter them around Usadlosť pod Kriváňom

The tajchy in the Horehronie region are unique—a heritage from the days of gold and silver mining. Our host Bea welcomes you at Nebo nad Štiavnicou, perched on an aptly named hill.

Visit the site known as the Slovak Stonehenge in Holíč in western Slovakia. A group of 22 stones with mysterious inscriptions and a carved hammer was discovered by chance during housing development in 1988.

Start from: Bohogotka, Tainy House

If tales of castle ghosts aren't enough, we've got more: the mysterious "Bermuda Triangle" in the Tríbeč forests; an old house in Štiavnické Bane said to be haunted; the Mariánska Čeľaď monastery with stories of sinister monks; Sklabiňa Castle, plagued by paranormal phenomena.
