10 offbeat stays in Poland

10 offbeat stays in Poland

10 unique spots for those who've seen it all

There are places where a stay is not just an overnight. It’s an Experience. With a capital “E”—for these hidden gems, we don’t shy away from a bit of grandeur. Run by enthusiasts who chose the bumpy road: restoring a historic building that was never meant to be lived in, or creating something entirely new beyond any architect’s daydream. You might not know that Poland has accommodations like these. They spin, hover over ravines, rise from rivers, or let you wake up convinced you’re in Tolkien’s Middle-earth. If you’re after a truly extraordinary night’s sleep, check out these addresses.

A Podlasie Village Frozen in Time

Step back in time

What was life like in a Podlasie village a century ago? You won’t find out exactly—because the owners have ensured modern comforts. In every other way, though, this is an open-air museum showcasing historic wooden architecture of northeastern Poland. Spread over 70 hectares between a pond and a forest, you’ll discover a historic windmill and a granary. We’ve covered a lot of spots on Slowhop, and trust us, this one is a national standout. It’s a tiny world where you can immerse yourself in Podlasie culture, savor regional cuisine, and get closer to nature—returning home richer by a whole spectrum of experiences.

“One of the two most wonderful, if not the most wonderful places we’ve ever stayed at! It’s hard to call it lodging—in reality, you could spend the whole day at Zaborek without ever stepping outside, and never get bored. Perfect for a family trip (they offer kids’ activities, storytimes, playgrounds, and workshops) or a getaway with your dog—the grounds are so vast that pups can roam freely, only the pool is off-limits. Zaborek isn’t just a few buildings; it’s an estate where beautiful old structures and chapels are bathed in greenery and flowers. The rooms are comfortable and the food so delicious you’ll never want it to end! We will definitely be back and highly recommend it!”.

An Apartment in a Historic Train Station

Catch any train

Ever slept at a train station? Not just a bench after a summer festival, but truly staying in one. Nestled in a restored historic station, it’s an experience you’ll remember forever. It’s high on our list of romantic getaways—even if your plus one isn’t a train geek. Monika has turned the old station into a cozy, colorful retreat. Bonus: stroll across fields and meadows, cycle the nearby scenic routes, or paddle a kayak close by.

“Stacja Ostrowite near Golub was a great pick for architecture buffs. It’s perfect for a weekend stop or even a day trip away from the city hustle. The atmosphere is warm and homely. Monika is wonderful—communication was seamless at every stage. I’ll happily return if I’m in the area.”

A Restored Mill from 1880

Drift away

Some places let you step onto the terrace and leap right into the river. The secret? They’re old water mills. Restoring and converting a nearly 150-year-old mill takes imagination and courage—qualities Bożena and Andrzej have in spades. Today, those of us living in flats or houses can discover life by the river firsthand. Better yet, dive in: taste Andrzej’s legendary cooking, sway in a hammock on the island, or spend a quiet afternoon reading with your feet dipped in the Kośna River.

“We already knew this place would be interesting, but the experience was truly unique. We swam under the mill, explored the entire island where the owners grow their crops, enjoyed the sauna, and then, after dark, slipped back into the river. The hosts serve guests with such passion and have poured their hearts into every detail of the property.”

The House That Follows the Sun

Chase the sun

There are probably only a handful of these worldwide. The standout feature? It pivots to follow the sun. Debates like “east or north exposure?” might exhaust you when house hunting—but on vacation, you can forget them. This self-rotating house wakes you with morning rays, then turns for afternoon reading in golden-hour light—or vice versa, depending on your preference. Inside its 23 m², you’ll find a design lover’s dream of style and sophistication. Hosts Rafał and Ola sweat every detail, and word of their hospitality spreads fast on Slowhop.

“This was by far the best place I’ve ever stayed in Poland. In terms of guest care, it’s world-class. From the delightful, super-friendly welcome by Rafał, through the gourmet snack upon arrival, to the futuristic yet luxurious interior—it’s beyond description. The rotating feature is a real gimmick, but even without it, this spot would be Poland’s top pick. Perfect style, taste, comfort (that bed!), jacuzzi, total indulgence, incredible rejuvenation. A day here feels like a week-long vacation anywhere in the world. Thank you so much!”

A Hobbit House in Poland

Find the Shire

Who among us didn’t dream of stepping into the hobbits’ realm while reading the famous saga? Dreams are meant to come true, and we like to think we make it easier. So, come spend your holiday inside a green hill that happily welcomes even the tallest visitors. This turf-covered home charms with a fairy-tale interior and enchanted atmosphere. The hosts have crafted an immersive experience, complete with an on-site treasure hunt straight out of Middle-earth.

“Pagórek in Brenna is pure magic. Even the little gate and sign at the entrance, written in that characteristic font, set the Tolkien mood. The interior is perfect down to every detail, with all the modern comforts. Inside the nest you’ll find artifacts on the walls evoking the journey and its characters. In the garden there’s a heated pool, a jacuzzi, a grill, plus a spot for feasting and relaxing—it all matches the owner’s description. And finally: there really is a letter for guests and a treasure hunt! A blast for kids and adults alike. I recommend it to Tolkien fans, nature lovers, adventure seekers… everyone!!!”

A Private Orangery at a Manor

Trace your roots

This might win the “storybook” award. If someone in your group is a romantic with a soft spot for historic architecture, just rent the orangery for the weekend. Two hours from Warsaw, find yourself in the world of manor delights: sunlit mornings through large paned windows, picnics in the historic park, and walks around the palace pond. All for less than many modern cabins.

“Beautiful and one-of-a-kind (!!). Nowhere else can you rent an entire historic building just for yourself. And at an affordable price!! Great history and wonderful owners—you’ll want to stay and chat. I can’t wait to return in summer!”

A Design-Filled House in Białowieża

Imperial officials would be amazed

A trip to Białowieża is an experience on its own. But discovering the ancient forest from this starting point? That’s something else. Hardly anyone passing the 19th-century wooden house of the tsar’s officials expects an unobtrusive design haven today. The hosts, who value history, have preserved as much as possible: a tiled stove, exposed brick walls, and the original wood floors. If you’ve always wanted to visit the Białowieża Forest but needed a push to head to northeast Poland—here it is.

“Absolutely wonderful place. One of the best I’ve visited on Slowhop. A beautiful house (a harmonious blend of old and new) in a great location, equipped so you feel at home from the first moment. The owners are very helpful. And, of course, magical Podlasie. Highly recommended!”

A Windmill Handbuilt by the Hosts

See the windmill stay

It’s hard to believe, but it really happened: Nina and Rafał built a windmill on a Masurian hill using techniques from 200 years ago. Every stone and beam was carried up by hand. Why? That may be beyond ordinary understanding. For the rest of us, you just pack your bags and spend a night in this extraordinary Masurian structure. Every moment here is unforgettable: from bathing in the cast-iron tub, to sleeping under the exposed machinery, to mood-setting campfires on the hill overlooking three lakes.

“One could write endlessly about the Zyndaki Windmill, yet no text would capture its charm and magic. It’s a place you must experience—it’s truly one of a kind. Every floor reveals details that disarm and captivate. Nothing is accidental; everything creates a perfect whole that hypnotizes and invites you inside. All this amid the idyllic embrace of grasses, forests, and lakes, where the windmill feels like a natural part of the ecosystem. (…)”

A Tiny House Suspended Over a Stream

Feel the lightness

How about a vacation spent beside a stream? Actually, we should say above it. This house is suspended between the two banks, tucked into a Beskid forest. Guests who have visited say waking up to the babbling water below is priceless. It’s one of those spots you’ll spot in books on the most amazing forest cabins. Discover it before American publishers do.

“For years we’ve traveled to unusual places. This is worth every penny. The concept of this cabin is pure genius—our first encounter with one like this. The stream’s constant murmur under the house, the view from the window and terrace—plus a jacuzzi under the cabin—makes it perfect. Total privacy and freedom. (…) I recommend it to everyone.”

A Realm Fit for Elves

Check for elves

Mystery level: 100%. The hosts reveal the address only after you book. All you know until then is it’s nestled in a forest in Masovia. Wasn’t that just like Tolkien’s saga? Elves guard their hideouts with solemn care. If you choose to find your way to this woodland haven, expect vivid moments in a place cut off from the world. From bathing under a stained-glass mermaid window to forest mornings and evenings in a lit-up soaking tub, you’ll remember these experiences for a long time.

“Przytullas is exceptional—nothing is random here: from soothing colors and warm wood to the carefully chosen tableware. It makes you feel like you’re somewhere you’ve only seen on Instagram. Sipping morning tea while watching jays and tits peck seeds from the snow—priceless! Plus a selection of interesting books. What more could you ask for? The host communication was perfect. Thank you for the hospitality!”
